This hit-packed album showcases the raw edge of Eurythmics stage personality, with lyrics and music that are more declarative than on previous records. Featuring a diverse mix of sounds, Be Yourself Tonight is grounded in soulful Rock and Roll and marks a step forward for the duo. Featuring a string of hits and duets, the album succeeds in uniting Dave and Annie's unique musical interests with a host of guest artists. The album has a strong message of solidarity and strength and is one of the group's finest records.
The album opens confidently with the hard-edged Rock pizzaz of Would I Lie To You, laying down the foundation for the songs to come. Annie sings outrageously camp vocals on There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) accompanied by Stevie Wonder on harmonica. The song became a massive hit in Britain and reached number one on the charts in July of that year, remaining in the charts for the next thirteen weeks. This was followed closely with Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves, Annie's feminist duet with Aretha Franklin, which hit number nine in the charts. Elvis Costello also appears on the album singing with Annie on Adrian.
Lyrically, Annie was still investigating the painful side to her emotions, using her sharp voice to attain a more bluesy interpretation. Dave had developed a glorious new confidence in the studio and produced grinding, rock-out tracks that left behind the light, electro-pop sounds of the early 80s.
Full of the earthy sounds of Rock, Be Yourself Tonight is an instantly gratifying album and a testament to Dave and Annie's commitment to evolution and creative success.
